This ain’t no love story: Romeo & Juliet

It always stuns me how, in popular culture, Romeo & Juliet has this reputation as a “timeless love story” or some such sappy nonsense. I’m going to make the case that play is an absolute mockery of love stories, with naive teenagers making non-stop stupid decisions, being advised by adults making even stupider decisions, and it all ends in a bloodbath.

Just remember, “wherefore” means “why,” not “where,” as in, “wherefore” does anyone get off finding this play romantic, vs. hysterically funny?
